While the number of active COVID-19 cases in Mumbai are surging, reports claim that almost 90 per cent of the beds put aside for coronavirus patients are empty. Accounts have quoted doctors who elaborated on how those infected with the virus recently usually have mild or moderate symptoms, therefore do not need hospitalizations.

The curve had initially flattened by October-end, the surge of COVID-19 is however yet again seen in Mumbai, with many claiming it to be a possible sign towards the third wave. Since the past few days, Mumbai has been contributing to a significant proportion of Maharashtra’s total number of cases.

Till Monday, December 27, BMC data depicted that 13,789 of the 15,278 COVID-19 beds were vacant in Mumbai. Additionally, from the 1,986 ICU beds, a mere 305 were full.  Moreover, of the 1,157 ventilator beds, only 186 were occupied. Of the 6,790 beds with oxygen support, 491 were full.

In private hospitals, on the other hand, only 731 of the 3,671 beds were occupied. According to reports, only 7-10 per cent of the coronavirus patients on the island are needing hospitalisation. Similarly, reports have also been doing the rounds on how a considerable number of cases in the city are coming from high-rise buildings.
