The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC), in collaboration with Project Mumbai and with support from Mindspace REIT, distributed 100 garbage bins and 65 garden benches made from recycled plastic as part of its ‘Ghar Ghar Tiranga, Ghar Ghar Swachhata’ campaign on Independence Day.

The symbolic distribution was held at the NMMC headquarters after the flag-hoisting ceremony. Mayor Sujata Patil and Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, along with other civic officials and dignitaries, handed over the recycled products to participating institutions.

The initiative focuses on plastic collection, recycling and reuse, while encouraging citizens to actively participate in environmental conservation. Over the past 11 months, around nine tonnes of plastic waste have been collected through the programme and sent for recycling and reuse.

The campaign has also reached approximately 55,000 students and citizens through various awareness programmes. So far, 53 schools, nine colleges, 20 housing societies and 10 offices have actively participated in the initiative.

100 bins and 65 benches to be distributed

As part of the second phase of the initiative, 100 bins with a capacity of 240 litres and 65 garden benches made from recycled plastic are being distributed to schools, housing societies and NGOs that have actively contributed to plastic collection.

Representatives of Green World Society in Digha, Agro Garden in Belapur, Datta Meghe College of Engineering in Airoli, DAV Public School in Nerul and NMMC School No. 10 were among those who received the recycled bins symbolically.

The distribution was carried out in the presence of NMMC officials, including Health Committee Chairman Dr Jayaji Nath, Women and Child Welfare Committee Chairperson Saluja Sutar, corporator Netra Shirke, Additional Commissioners Sunil Pawar and Dr Rahul Gethe, City Engineer Shirish Aradwad and senior officials from the administration, solid waste management, gardens and education departments. Project Mumbai Chief Project Officer Dharmaraj Solanki was also present.

35 recycled benches already distributed

Prior to the latest distribution, Project Mumbai and Mindspace REIT had provided 35 recycled-plastic garden benches to organisations that have consistently participated in the plastic collection drive.

These included four benches for NMMC public hospitals, four for the night shelter at Sector 4, Ghansoli, 17 for schools, four for housing societies, four for NGOs and two for corporate offices.

Digha society collects over two tonnes of plastic

Green World Society in Digha has emerged as one of the major contributors to the initiative, with residents collecting more than two tonnes of plastic over the past year for recycling.

Society representative Madhavi Deshmukh said residents collectively decided to participate in the initiative and successfully maintained regular plastic collection. She also appealed to other housing societies to join the programme and contribute towards protecting and conserving Navi Mumbai’s environment.

Recycled products showcased in Airoli park

As part of the collaboration between NMMC, Project Mumbai and Mindspace REIT, an eco-friendly installation featuring more than three recycled products has also been created at Rajiv Gandhi Garden in Sector 3, Airoli. The installation allows citizens to see how recycled plastic can be converted into useful products for public spaces.

The initiative aims to reinforce the message that waste is not merely something to be discarded, but can be treated as a valuable resource. By collecting, processing and reusing plastic instead of sending it to landfills, the civic body and its partners are seeking to promote sustainable waste management and greater public participation in environmental conservation.
