According to the civic data, over 88 per cent of COVID-19 cases in Mumbai last week came from high-rises, with slums hardly reporting cases in big numbers, reports stated. Witnessing the increase in cases, the BMC conducted a study of the nearly 3,300 positive cases reported in the earlier week.

Based on accounts, Suresh Kakani, additional municipal commissioner elaborated on how nearly 88 per cent of the cases were from buildings. Adding that the majority of the wards aren't finding considerable cases from slum pockets.

Interestingly, narratives claim that during the second wave of coronavirus, a similar trend was seen which were attributed to higher exposure amongst those dwelling in slums to enhanced immunity to a testing bias.

Wards in the city that have reported the highest weekly growth rates include, A, D, H-West, G-South and K-West at 0.15 per cent, 0.13 per cent, 0.12 per cent and 0.12 per cent, respectively.

Additionally, reports have further thrown light upon the fact that in the M-West ward, over 1.5 lakh or 35 per cent of the people reside in slums. However, the said ward hasn't found many cases there. In the N ward too, nearly 60 per cent of the population lives in slums, but the majority of the cases are from high-rises.

Nonetheless, experts have cautioned that low detection in slums doesn't mean any cases. This is because they believe slum dwellers are hesitant to get tested or have mild symptoms. Building residents, on the other hand, follow an opposite trend.
