Maharashtra: Over 60 Lakh Adolescents Between 15-18 Years Will Be Eligible For COVID-19 Vaccine

Maharashtra has 60.63 lakh young adults between the age group of 15 -18 who will be eligible to attain the COVID-19 vaccine, while 29.09 lakh senior citizens with comorbidities will be able to attain the precaution doses.

Maharashtra has 60.63 lakh young adults between the age group of 15 -18 who will be eligible to attain the COVID-19 vaccine, while 29.09 lakh senior citizens with comorbidities will be able to attain the precaution doses. These estimates were shared by the Union with the state government on Tuesday, December 28 in light of the expanded vaccination drive, reports stated.

From January 3, vaccination for the young adult's group will commence, whilst that for senior citizens to get precautionary doses will begin from January 10. Presently, the union has mentioned that Covaxin will be administered to those between the age of 15 -18. The type of shot to be given to the senior citizens hasn't been specified yet. 

Moreover, in an update, the Centre remarked that senior citizens do not need to give any medical certificate to prove that they have comorbidities. Nonetheless, they have been told to attain advice from their doctors. 

According to reports, Maharashtra is estimated to have over 80 lakh senior citizens and the union has estimated that 20 per cent could have comorbidities. Certain narratives have quoted, Dr Pradeep Vyas, state's additional chief secretary of health who elaborated on how the Centre has followed the Registrar General of India's information. 

Based on narratives, in Mumbai, the number of senior citizens eligible for the precautionary shots could be nearly 2.5 lakh of the aggregate population of 11 lakh. Similarly, it could have over 9 lakh young adults to inoculate. Special time slots in the prevalent vaccination centres will be curated for adolescents.

Accounts have quoted the state's immunisation officer Dr Sachin Desai remarking that Maharashtra has over 50 lakh doses of the Covaxin to commence the inoculation of young adults.
