A shocking incident has come to light in Powai, wherein a dog has been shot with an air gun subsequently leading to its euthanasia on Wednesday. Shwetali Mulik who works for BARK-iNN, an animal housing facility, found the dog, Brownie, in an unwell condition and admitted him to the hospital.

Brownie was found in Lake Florence Housing Society in Powai, with a complaint now lodged against the accused. The police are said to be assessing CCTV footage from around the area to get a better idea of the culprit who committed this heinous crime.

Upon reaching the hospital, the doctors conducted an X-Ray which revealed two air gun bullets lodged in the dorsum and abdomen of the dog. While the doctors managed to remove one pellet from the body, the second bullet was reportedly lodged too deep into his ribs.

This, as per the doctors, suggests that Brownie was shot at a point-blank range. It is also mentioned that Brownie was suffering health issues previously, but the impact from the two air gun bullets clearly proved to be too much.

The police are looking to file cases under Article 427 (causing mischief) and 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc, of any value or any animal of the value of Rs 50) as well as Section 11 of the Indian Penal Code for treating animals with cruelty. Accordingly, the authorities have decided to file a case under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act against the accused who remains unknown at this point.

According to the residents, he had been staying in our complex for the past eight years. It said that the housing society had a group of dog owners and dog lovers who donate and collect funds for the welfare of these community dogs or strays. Since 2016, we have been vaccinating these street animals for rabies and other diseases.
