A month after the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) wrote to the e-commerce site Amazon’s management to include Marathi language option in the app, the Raj Thackeray-led party is becoming more aggressive over its demand.
The MNS, in a letter, submitted a month ago, had stated that the party would not tolerate an indifferent and step-motherly treatment towards the Marathi language. It had also threatened an agitation if the e-commerce site did not include Marathi as a preferred language option in its app.
With no positive response from the Amazon, MNS has started a campaign: “No Marathi, No Amazon”. As a part of the campaign, the party has put up posters saying #BanAmazon outside the office of the e-commerce site.
MNS leader Akhil Chitre has also written a letter to Maharashtra Industry Minister Subhash Desai, urging him to issue notification regarding the use of Marathi language in foreign and international private establishments doing business in the state.
According to reports, on December 4, a lawyer appearing for the e-commerce giant Amazon was allegedly thrashed by MNS workers outside Dindoshi sessions court. The court was hearing a plea filed by MNS that challenged a stay on the court's earlier order which allowed Amazon to continue operations in the city.
Earlier, Amazon filed a plea against MNS, which had threatened to not allow e-commerce companies to operate in the city. Amazon had sought a stay from court, which has been granted and has been continued by the court from time to time in order to continue its operations in the city.
The petition was filed by Amazon Transportation Services Ltd on October 19. The lawyer claimed that MNS party workers including Akhil Chitre and his goons were waiting for his arrival outside the court. Once, he came out of the session court's gate, MNS party workers thrashed him.
Responding to the customer care conversation, the app executives have stated that it needs some time to add the Marathi language.
