If you’re a bibliophile in the city, there are strong chances that you must have been to Mumbai’s Strand Book Stall that stands tall for 70 years.

The store that began with just two shelves at the Strand cinema hall in Colaba is now going to be open only for the next few days, and will down its shutters on February 28, as told by Vidya Virkar, managing partner of the store.

For those who don’t know what charm is associated with Strands Book Stall, it was one of those little bookshops in Fort where you could discover that reading could be affordable and pleasurable too.

Padmashree TN Shanbhag and his knowledge and assorted taste of books were the reason English readers would drop in over the years. The humble founder who passed away in 2009, imported books from England and gave readers a 20% discount. Strand Book Stall itself started to be confounded after Shanbag’s demise.

Currently, a final clearance sale is on at the dear bookstore. The store space will continue to be under the company NRB Bearings, which rented the property to Strand.
