Over 100 Species of Birds Spotted at Karnala Bird Sanctuary Near Panvel

Forest officials at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary have spotted around 103 species of birds following a winter season bird count conducted by the forest department. Officials said that a scientific bird count was conducted for the first time in the state of Maharashtra with the help of bird experts and scientists.

Range Forest Officer of the Sanctuary, Pradeep Chavan said, “Through this counting, we leant existence of different species of birds like Common Hawk Cuckoo, Brown Wood Owl and Alpine Swift. We will conduct similar counting during summer, monsoon and autumn.”

This sanctuary is situated within Raigad district, more specifically at the Mumbai-Goa highway approximately 10 kilometres away from Panvel. Three rare birds namely Ashy Minivet, three-toed kingfisher, and Malabar Trogon are found at the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. Authorities said that the sanctuary has approximately 134 species of birds which includes several migratory birds.
