A physically handicapped resident doctor Dr. Rohit Kumar was beaten up by patient's relatives at the municipal Sion hospital on 18 March around 10.30 pm.

Resident doctors at the hospital, already fed up with rising incidents of assaults on resident doctors in the state, held a candle march on 19 March outside the hospital to raise awareness about the issue. Resident doctors also filed a police complaint against the patient's relatives, after which the Sion police arrested three accused. These were released on bail later.

Sources say that on 18 March, a 60-year-old woman succumbed to injuries and the resident doctor on duty informed the relatives about the death. On hearing the news, however, they blamed the doctor and beat up Dr. Rohit.

The resident doctors say they are unhappy with the paucity of staff at the hospital that leads to the systemic failure, and for which they feel they are being targeted.

They say they want the vacant posts to be filled up as soon as possible.
