Mumbai Metro One, on Monday, August 16, 2021, announced the Majhi Metro Festival 2021 with a new theme 'Rang De Metro' whereby the metro stations in the city will be beautified by national and local level artists.

Metro One currently operates services in the city from Ghatkopar-Andheri-Versova and as a part of the initiative, the team plans to collaborate the artists to decorated the stations with artwork. This is an opportunity for budding artists from art institutions to collaborate with renowned names from the industry. The selection will be done by a special jury and applications for the same are invited.

Meanwhile, officials have confirmed that passengers can also participate in the program and will have to send their artwork during the registrations. The theme has been designed with an aim to support the campaigns planned by the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Housing, and hence the artwork created at the station will be based on Indian Independence. 

Majhi Metro Festival 2021 is said to be one a kind event which will offer artists a massive opportunity by making metro stations as the canvas. Walls spanning 20,000 sq.ft. will be made available for the artwork and this is expected to attract nearly half a million commuters in Mumbai. Besides this, the team also plans to conduct events, workshops,  exhibition and more under the initiative.

Sharing more information, the  Majhi Metro Festival 2021 website states, "The theme for Majhi Metro 2021 is well thought of and it will give Mumbaikars an opportunity to be a part of making their own Mumbai Metro stations more colourful, vibrant & with fresh perspective through this festival as a shield to combat the difficult times like this pandemic which will help keep the negativity at the bay and celebrate the life with optimism."

"Rang de Metro is all about the artist’s interpretation of topics that can resonate with every Mumbaikar on topics like what Mumbai means (spirit of Mumbai, Bollywood, colours of Mumbai), 75th Independence day - Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav, humans & environment, freedom & social change and many more. Choose from paintings, illustrations, sculpting, installations, graphics or typography you have the liberty to do anything you desire to bring out the theme the best," it added.

Here are the important dates one should know about the initiative

  • Registration opens: August 17, 2021
  • Registration closes: September 14, 2021
  • Artwork Submission Date: October 15, 2021
  • Exhibition & Winners felicitation: November 12, 2021
  • Execution of artworks at Metro stations: December 20, 2021
