Shortly after the take-off due to a technical issue, a SpiceJet Boeing 737 Max aircraft returned to Mumbai airport on Thursday evening, December 10.

In an official statement, SpiceJet said that Flight SG-467 operating Mumbai-Kolkata landed safely in Mumbai.

According to reports, SG-467 was scheduled for departure for Kolkata at 6.40 pm. The Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft took off and was cruising at 33,000 ft when the pilots made a U-turn around 6.57 pm, and the flight returned to Mumbai around 7.53 pm, showed the flight data from www.flightradar24.com, a global air traffic monitoring website.

While the flight was enroute, one of the engines suffered a snag it had to be shut down. Since twin engine aircraft can land safely on one engine, this one did so at Mumbai.

For those unversed, on March 13, 2019, all Max planes were grounded in India by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This came three days after the crash of an Ethiopian Airlines 737 MAX plane near Addis Ababa, which had left 157 people, including four Indians, dead.

SpiceJet, the only operator of Max planes in the country, had signed a USD 22 billion deal with Boeing for 205 aircraft in 2017, and has 13 of these planes in its fleet at present.

Moreover, it has also come to light that Billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala’s Akasa has also ordered 72 Boeing 737 Max planes.
