The elevated road connecting Vakola and the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) is going through a slight delay due to technical work and will now open in April. The corridor is part of the larger Santacruz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) project.
Earlier, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) had announced that the road will open by the end of March. However, the completion has been postponed because a girder along the Western Express Highway near Vakola needs careful installation.
The alignment at this section is curved, which requires precise handling. Authorities have decided to implement a temporary traffic stop in the area to safely finish this work. The elevated road will be 1.2 kilometres long and is estimated to cost around INR 645 crore. The structure will have two lanes in each direction to allow smoother traffic flow.
Once operational, the corridor will connect several important intersections in Mumbai, including Vakola Junction, Ambedkar Chowk, University Junction, and BKC. Travel time from Santacruz to BKC currently takes 30 to 35 minutes during peak hours. Once the road opens, it will drop to five to ten minutes.
The absence of traffic signals along the elevated corridor will allow vehicles to move continuously, which will also help ease congestion in nearby neighbourhoods. The new corridor will also offer an alternative route for cars on the Western Express Highway, including those heading toward Dahisar.
