On Saturday, Mumbai reported 1,566 fresh COVID-19 cases, taking the tally of coronavirus in the city to 28,817. The city recorded 40 deaths in the last 24 hours, as compared to 27 deaths on Friday. The death toll of Mumbai due to COVID-19 stands at 949.

Among the 40 people that succumbed to coronavirus, 22 had co-morbidities. Of the 40 deceased, 25 were male and 15 were female. Four of them were below 40 years, 21 were over 60 years and the remaining 14 were between 40-60 years.

While the city is yet to receive respite from the increase in the number of cases, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday stated that the doubling period for Mumbai has gone up to 14 days. During his interaction with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)-run hospitals, Thackeray asked them to emphasise on setting up field hospitals.

Alongside, with monsoon around the corner, the Maharashtra CM also directed the hospitals to step up preparations to handle dengue and leptospirosis cases.

The state, throughout the day, reported 2,608 new Covid-19 cases, which is the second-highest single-day spike for Maharashtra. With this, the state’s COVID-19 tally now stands at 47,190. In the last 24 hours, the state recorded 60 deaths, taking Maharashtra's death toll to 1,577.

As per the State Health Department, a total of 13,404 patients have been discharged till date. Currently, 4,85,623 people are in home quarantine and 33,545 people are in institutional quarantine.
