According to reports, 20 vehicles have used the EV charging station at Kohinoor building parking lot in Dadar West so far.

Moreover, this happens to be the first EV charging station in a public parking lot (PPL). Earlier, Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray had inaugurated the EV charging station and said that more such stations would come up.

In addition, Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also exploring locations on municipal properties where charging points for the EVs can be installed. Meanwhile, these charging points are to be later increased to 100. As per the authorities, the BMC is also planning to install solar energy plants instead of conventional energy for charging points.

The Dadar West charging station has the capacity to charge 72 vehicles in a day, with a 2 DC fast charger, which can charge four vehicles at a time, and three slow chargers that can charge three vehicles at a time.

Furthermore, the BMC plans to replace its current automobiles that use fossil fuels, with electric vehicles. In the first stage, about 100 such vehicles will be acquired, not just for official purposes, but also for garbage transportation by the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department.

State Environment Minister, Aaditya Thackeray on 13 July, initiated the Maharashtra Electric Vehicles Policy through which utilization of battery-run vehicles is promoted. This is done to reduce the emissions of harmful gases. Immunity from road tax, registration charges and property tax has been given to facilitate this shift. Based on some narratives, electric cars are better for the environment since it significantly reduces the carbon dioxide emissions.
