Raising concerns for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), Dharavi recorded 26 new cases in a day on April 16, Thursday. Ever since the first case was detected in Asia's largest slum, the government has been on an alert owing to the density of population in the area. With 26 new cases, the tally of positive patients from Dharavi has reached 86 with nine fatalities.

Due to the density of slums in Dharavi, the coronavirus pandemic possibly poses a greater threat to the area than any other part of the city. Taking that into consideration, Dharavi has also declared a hotspot for coronavirus and the authorities imposed stringent regulations for the residents.

The BMC has also been aggressively conducting tests to avoid further contamination of the virus. According to the authorities, the aggressive testing is the reason why the number of cases has been increasing in slum areas like Dharavi and Worli Koliwada.

Meanwhile, among the 26 new cases, 20 are male patients. The most number of cases have been detected from Muslim Nagar area with 11 new people testing positive. Four new cases were detected from the Mukund Nagar area which has already been declared as a containment zone. New cases were also registered from Sairaj Nagar, Ramji Chwal, and Social Nagar.

The G-North ward of the municipal corporation has prepared a separate action plan for Dharavi. When a person is tested positive, the civic body has put their close contacts in isolation wards as a precautionary measure.

The tests in Dharavi are being conducted in phases and therefore, every day, new cases have been emerging from the slums. However, in order to cater to 10 lakh people residing in Dharavi and prevent the outbreak from reaching community transmission in the area, the municipal corporation will have to arrange for a larger isolation ward.
