In some good news from Mumbai, a woman and her infant have both tested negative for the coronavirus as per tests conducted at Kasturba Hospital in the city. This came as a huge sigh of relief for the family as the first test conducted at a private laboratory saw both the child and the mother testing positive.

“The doctor said both tested negative. The news brought us great relief. But why did the findings of the private laboratory not co-relate with that of Kasturba, and were we erroneously given a positive report? My wife, who had undergone a C-section, had to endure a lot as her report came positive,” the wife’s husband said.

The husband’s test result from the aforementioned private laboratory tested negative and is currently awaiting his second test result from Kasturba Hospital. In a time when some are talking about lack of adequate testing kits in the country, news like this brings a stark warning against private laboratories conducting COVID-19 tests.

During the early days of the outbreak in India, Mumbai authorized a handful of private laboratories to conduct COVID-19 tests. While this meant a lot of people lined up outside private labs, something that is antithetical to combating this virus, we’re also beginning to see its negative impact. The question now is if some of the tests conducted by the laboratories have falsely provided COVID-19 negative results when the person was positive. There’s no data on this front, and we hope tol learn more about it in the days to come.A report earlier this week mentioned that there was a lack of private testing kits across Maharashtra’s laboratories. Keeping this in mind, the state ordered them to stop collecting samples.
