Maharashtra: Three new strains of Delta-plus variant detected in over 60 patients

In Maharashtra, Delta was found in one sample in December, eight in February, 185 in March, 1,737 in April, 3,547 in May, 1,551 in June and 1,060 in July.

Days after the genome sequencing resumed, it has been detected that three sub-lineages of the Delta-plus variant of the coronavirus are currently circulating in the state. 

According to reports, as many as 66 people have been found infected with the Delta plus variant in Maharashtra so far. The genome sequencing reports of these patients have revealed the presence of three new strains -- Ay.1, Ay.2 and Ay.3.

Besides, five patients have died, including one in Mumbai, the state health department said on Friday, August 13.

Experts stated that it has called for more epidemiological analysis to understand their impact on ongoing viral transmission.

Moreover, it has come to light that scientists have found 13 more sub-lineages of the Delta-plus stain starting from Ay.1, Ay.2, Ay.3 till 13. Of which, the first three sub-lineages have been found so far in Maharashtra

Of the total, 61 cases of new strains were found, which include 31 cases of Ay.1, 20 of AY.3 and 10 of AY.2 were detected. 

Of the 31 Ay.1 cases in the state, ten were found in April, six each in May and June, and nine in July. 

For Ay.2, which was first detected in March, was later found in seven cases in May and two in June. 

In July, Ay.1 and Ay.2 didn’t show signs of gaining against Delta, while it didn’t mention Ay.3 at that point in time. 

The Ay.1 cases have been found in sequenced samples since April, while Ay.2 has been found since March and Ay.3 since June.

Reports suggest that of 12,000 samples sequenced from Maharashtra, 8,089 were positive for Delta. 

In Maharashtra, the delta was found in one sample in December, eight in February, 185 in March, 1,737 in April, 3,547 in May, 1,551 in June and 1,060 in July. 

Meanwhile, in Mumbai, there are a total of 11 cases. Of which, a 63-year-old woman died recently. In addition, it was reported that from the deceased’s family, two were found with Delta-plus.
