More than 350 volunteers gathered at Manori Beach in Mumbai on Sunday, March 22, to carry out a large-scale clean-up drive to mark World Water Day. The drive began at 8 am and continued until 12 pm. By the end of the effort, nearly 3,000 kilograms of plastic waste had been collected from the beach.
Volunteers filled more than 400 bags with single-use plastic. All the collected waste was sent for recycling. The drive saw participation from eleven colleges and educational institutions. Students from NSS, NCC, and Green Clubs also took part in the clean-up work.
The clean-up was supported through a CSR partnership with the Leave India Foundation, which provided funding for the initiative. Organisers said that this effort is only the beginning of a long-term plan to maintain and improve the cleanliness of the beach.
Despite the progress made during the drive, a large amount of plastic waste still remains. It is estimated that more than 100 tonnes of plastic need to be removed from the area. As per reports, regular clean-up drives will be carried out throughout the year. The team has urged the public to continue taking part in such activities and support the mission.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had contracted a firm from March 2021 to 2027, worth INR 99,614,899, for this purpose. The contracted company reportedly uses equipment such as a compactor, a skid steer loader to lift sand, and a beach cleaning machine that filters waste from the sand.
