Mumbai: 30 sweepers and sanitation workers protesting outside Mantralaya detained

According to reports, Mumbai police have detained at least 30 sweepers and sanitation workers on Wednesday, January 19, for holding protest near the new administration building of Mantralaya, the state secretariat, in Mumbai.

The protest was organised by the coordination committee of sweepers and sanitation workers, said an official.

Of the total persons detained, 10 were women and 20 men, who were involved in the protest, the official said. They were taken to Marine Drive police station in South Mumbai.

Moreover, police have deployed adequate 'bandobast' outside the Mantralaya.

This comes at a time when the nation is the midst of pandemic owing to the outbreak of coronavirus. During this period, the sanitation workers, cleaners and sweepers have played an important role to keep the cities spick and span.

Besides, there have been reports of several people attempting to suicide outside Mantralaya. According to reports, a 48-year-old farmer who tried to kill himself outside the Maharashtra secretariat died during treatment at a hospital on August 22.

In addition, the Maharashtra Legislature Secretariat (Mantralaya) in Mumbai received a bomb threat at 12:40 pm on May 30, 2021. Upon receiving this information, the control room informed the Mumbai Police which reached the spot with the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) for further investigation.
