As per reports, as many as 35,000 cops are to hit the streets of the city on New Year's Eve in order to maintain law and order amidst the celebrations, in view of the pandemic.

The Maharashtra government earlier on December 21 had decided to impose night curfew from December 22 in the municipal corporation limits in the state. Moreover, the night curfew will remain in force from 11 PM to 6 AM every day till January 5. Moreover, flyers from European and West Asian countries arriving in the state will have to undergo 14 days of institutional quarantine.

The announcement came after CM Uddhav Thackeray chaired a meeting to review the situation in the state with regards to COVID-19 and the implementation of preventive measures to curb the spread of the disease. As a result, in view of the night curfew, hotels and restaurants in Mumbai have decided to ring in the New Year by 10:30 PM instead of midnight in adherence with the official guidelines put forth by the authorities.

Meanwhile, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vishwas Nangre stated that the Police are to be deployed in order to maintain law and order in a bid to maintain strict vigil against the norms that have been imposed due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, and the subsequent discovery of the new COVID-19 strain.

Apart from these measures, anti-teasing squads are to be present in several locations in order to prevent incidents of harassment against women. In addition, police have also taken anti-sabotage measures considering terror threats to the island city.
