3700 foreign nationals evacuated from Mumbai International Airport during the lockdown

The statement released by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) said that these foreign nationals were sent back home on 20 repatriation flights between March 25 to April 14, 2020.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) recently released a statement which said that the authorities at the Mumbai airport have helped more than 3700 foreign nationals in an evacuation conducted with 20 repatriation flights. 

Officials ensured that the stranded passengers from different countries who were stuck at the airport were sent back home to London, Singapore, Paris, Atlanta, Tokyo and other locations, during the first phase of the COVID-19 lockdown in India. The statement said, "GVK-MIAL managing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) evacuated over 3700 passengers with 20 repatriation flights between 25th March - 14th April 2020.”

All the safety protocols were followed on the flight to ensure the passengers are safe amidst the coronavirus outbreak. A thorough screening was conducted from the time passengers entered the airport until they boarded the aircraft. The process was followed for people who arrived in Mumbai.  

Officials at the airport have also ensured seamless cargo operations by managing 240 cargo flight movements during the above-mentioned lockdown period.

As of April 15, 2020, Mumbai crossed the 2000-mark has a total of 2010 coronavirus cases, out of which 1896 were active and 114 were dead. The total number of cases in the city were 2916. Areas like Worli-Prabhadevi, Grant Road, Andheri and others have more number of cases when compared to other localities. Government officials have also sealed many zones in Mumbai to ensure that spread of the virus is controlled.

PM Modi on April 14, 2020, announced that the lockdown in India will be extended until May 3, 2020. He also emphasised that the state government officials will be checking areas strictly to identify hotspots in different cities, until April 20, and only if the area is found safe, some restrictions will be lifted in the lockdown period.
