A survey on waste management was organised by Green Pencil Foundation in Seva Sadan's College Of Education in Ulhasnagar. Plastic and polythene has been increasing in our day to day life for many years. Plastic and polythene is not only harmful for human health but also it is very dangerous for nature and biodiversity.

It started an initiative for the plastic and polythene free campuses that is Green Campus Initiative. In the survey, which was conducted by Rakshita Manglani, city head of Green Pencil Foundation Mumbai,  many questions are asked about the united sustainability goals and domestic challenges related to plastic and polythene waste.

As per the study 44 per cent out of 100 using plastic bottles to drink water on campuses. Due to the presence of a chemical called phthalates in plastic, it can lead to problems like liver cancer and sperm count reduction (in men). A recent study done by the State University of New York in Fredonia. Sandeep Khanda, who is founder of Green Pencil Foundation, said that we all need to focus on more awareness on the plastic and polythene pollution and its negative impacts on humans and the environment.

The Foundation's volunteer shared that there are many sustainable and good options available in the market, by using which you can easily switch on the plastic free bottles. During the survey, 69.2 per cent students out of 100 per cent observed that their family members are using polythene to carry vegetables from the market. The littering of polythene in open spaces creates unhygienic conditions, as it acts as a breeding ground for insects and mosquitoes that cause diseases like malaria and dengue.

Polythene does not undergo degradation, thus staying in the soil for many years, which affects soil fertility and degrades the soil quality. Sandeep Khanda quoted that being a responsible human we all have to eliminate polythene and plastic products from our daily life for the future of people and mother earth.

During the survey, it found that 59.5 per cent of people out of 100 per cent are not using the dustbin in their car. Now it's high time to charge the fashion, if we throw something on the road then who will pick it up? This is the question for every person who easily adopts the option of polythene and plastic in their daily life.

India generates around 3.4 million tonnes (MT) of plastic waste, a report said noting that only 30 per cent of it is recycled. Sandeep Khanda quoted that reduce, reuse and recycle now we have to change with reduce and reuse only as we fail to recycle 70 per cent of our plastic waste produced. Being a human, being a society and being a policymaker, it is the responsibility of everyone to fight with the plastic and polythene pollution.

During the survey 54.1 per cent students out of 100 percent are not aware about how many UN Sustainability goals are there. Sandeep Khanda quoted that we have to shape the people on school and college level to know how they can become Green Champion by eliminating Plastic and polythene from their life. During the survey 28.6 percent students out of 100 percent said that waste management situation in your locality is worse. Rakshita Mangalni quoted that our waste is our responsibility so if we are producing the waste then why we are dependent on our produced waste is the responsibility of anyone else.

The College Principal quoted that individual efforts and awareness on a large scale in school and colleges definitely will help out in shaping a better plastic, polythene free and sustainable society and future. During the survey 14.3 per cent out of 100 per cent considered that they had never been educated about proper waste disposal. Sandeep Khanda quoted that by proper education and practice on waste management on school and college level can add more value and definately will help out us to create an impact on a large scale.

During the survey all students took a pledge that they will eliminate the plastic and polythene from their life and become the Green Warriors with Green Pencil Foundation to make the society plastic and polythene free. During the activity College Management also took a pledge to eliminate the plastic and polythene from the campus under the Initiative "Green Campus' By Green Pencil Foundation.

During the end of activity college management gave a letter to Rakshita Mangalni in the form of a commitment to make their college plastic and polythene free. College Principal Presented the vote of thanks to Green Pencil Foundation and Rakshita Manglani for such a wonderful initiative towards making school and colleges plastic and polythene free.
