The Bombay High Court (HC) has developed a facility to generate geographical information system (GIS) based Choropleth maps.

A Choropleth map is a colour visual mapping system based on district or area-wise statistical data of cases.

The maps were created using data from the National Judicial Data Grid (NJDG) to show statistical distribution of cases in a colour-graded visual manner.

In a circular issued on August 19, the High Court administration said that such maps help the administration take data-driven policy decisions.

A sample released with the circular shows the district-wise pendency of cases at the end of the year 2022. This showed that a total of nearly 50 lakh cases have been pending across Maharashtra.

Highest amount of pendency: Mumbai, Thane and Pune

Least amount of pending cases: Gadchiroli, Gondia and Bhandara

Moreover, Mumbai and its suburbs has featured in every category which shows the highest number of criminal cases. Besides, Parbhani, Hingoli, Washim and Wardha have zero criminal cases which are more than 30 years old.

For civil cases:

- Districts like Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune and Ahmednagar displayed the highest numbers in pendency.

- These districts have on average over 1.5 lakh cases pending as on January 1, 2023.

- Districts like Gondia, Gadchiroli and Nandurbar showed the least amount of pendency of cases.

For criminal cases

- Districts like Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Pune and Nagpur fare high in the pendency with over 5 lakh cases pending.

- Districts like Gadchiroli, Bhandara and Sindhudurg fared the lowest.
