As people keep flouting the rules imposed by the government due to the pandemic, in the last six months, more than 18,000 people have been prosecuted whereas more than ₹60 lakhs have been collected in fines from people choosing to not abide by the norms. Moreover, more than one lakh fines were levied on those who spit on the streets.

The campaign, which started in April, was initially fined ₹1,000. However, from September 13, the corporation reduced the amount and started collecting a fine of ₹200. The municipality was being criticized for imposing higher fines. The corporation on September 12 had decreased the fine from ₹1,000 to ₹200 as a consequence. Since April, 18,118 people have been fined at least ₹60 lakhs for not wearing masks.

In the Kandivali area, the maximum action was taken against 1,716 people. The highest collection of fines was made in this area at ₹7 lakhs. Apart from those who do not wear masks, Mumbai’s civic body, the BMC, has also initiated action against those who spit on the streets. A fine of ₹200 is usually collected from them. In the last 15 days, the BMC has collected 1,46,000 fines from 852 people. The highest fine of ₹40,000 has been collected from 232 people from the Ghatkopar area. Moreover, 17,900 fines were collected from 145 people in Kurla area.
