Every year, with the arrival of monsoon, the citizens complain of waterlogging in several parts of the city. The situation deteriorates as the roads are in poor condition. But the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to make amends as the BMC Standing Committee has approved a ₹632 crore road development project. The development comes just three months prior to the onset of monsoon.

The BMC administration had asked the Standing Committee to approve the project on priority basis. BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardeshi had written a letter to the committee's president, Yashwant Jadhav requesting to approve the proposal. As per the proposal, the BMC will look to conduct development projects such as concretisation of roads, installing side strips and development of CC passage.

However, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is in the opposition,  accused that the proposal has been approved by BMC hurriedly. The BJP also alleged that the ₹632 crore road development project proposal has been passed using the coronavirus outbreak as an excuse. After which, the BJP members staged a walk-out.

Meanwhile, the BMC is looking at May 31-deadline set by Commissioner Pardeshi which means that the project will only begin after monsoon in Mumbai.

Along with BJP corporators, members of Congress as well Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also raised objections about the hastily-passed proposal. They demanded that the proposal should not be approved in a hurried manner but the party in power, Shiv Sena approved five proposals with a majority.

Here are the highlights of the proposal:
