In order to free the students of schools in Thane district from addiction to substances like tobacco products, cigarettes, gutkha, an initiative of Tobacco Free School has been implemented through the District Government Hospital. The initiative has started showing good results and the administration has succeeded in making 936 schools 'tobacco free' between 2017 and 2024.


Students of class 8th to 10th in school often fall into addictions due to various reasons. Even though the sale of tobacco products is banned in the school premises, tobacco products are being sold secretly in the school premises. In the past few years, the rate of addiction to e-cigarettes has increased among students.


Thane District Government Hospital has started an initiative to start tobacco free schools as part of the National Tobacco Control Program to prevent students from getting addicted. This initiative was started in 2017 with the help of the organisation 'Salaam Mumbai'.

An app was created by Salaam Mumbai organisation. Schools are registered in this app. Some criteria are set in this. According to these criteria, the criteria of this initiative were to form a committee to make the school tobacco-free, to inspect the school to control tobacco, and to carry out various activities.


Fulfilling these criteria, 936 schools in Thane district have become tobacco free in the last seven years. The parents of those students who are addicted are informed about this by the district government hospital. After that, students are counselled through doctors. Students are being informed about cancer, oral disorders. Doctors say that it has a good effect on students.
