Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken action against 30,44,794 citizens till now who have been venturing outside their houses without a face mask amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

The civic body has time and again reminded people to wear a mask in view of the outbreak of coronavirus. Wearing a mask not only helps safeguard others but for oneself as well. However, citizens have been found flouting the rules even after repeated reminders.

According to sources, Mumbai Police has retrieved a fine of INR 61,28,62,000 from the people for the same. Moreover, more than three million citizens have been penalized in the last one and a half years. Currently, a fine of INR 200 is being levied on those who travel without masks. As per reports, the campaign will now be intensified. The municipality is reportedly considering imposing a fine of INR 1,200 on those who travel without masks. In addition, a proposal in this regard is pending with the administration for approval.

On the other hand, data released by the Railways confirms that the Western Railways (WR) has caught over 1200 passengers without a mask, between February 1 and July 19, 2021. A fine amount of over INR 1.63 lakh has been recovered from these passengers.

Rules regarding the mask have been imposed for several months now, and the state government has been raising awareness regarding the same frequently, thereby asking passengers to remain safe. However, some travellers have been disobeying the rules, thus increasing the risk of COVID-19 spread.
