Serious accidents occur due to violation of traffic rules including riding a bike without a helmet, speeding, driving under the influence of drugs, using mobile phones while driving. Many lose their lives while many are injured. It has come to light that many motorists are flouting the rules despite repeated public awareness about following the traffic rules. In the last financial year, i.e. 2023-24, the combined action of the Transport Department and the Police Department has resulted in the suspension of licence of 2,263 vehicle owners.


Riding a bike without a helmet is rampant in Mumbai. Along with this there are things like breaking the signal, transporting goods beyond the carrying capacity, transporting goods by passenger vehicles, refusing fares. As there is no concrete action on this, the vehicle owner recklessly drives the vehicle in violation of the rules. However, in the year 2023-24, the transport department took concrete action and suspended the licence of the vehicle owners. In addition, when a total of 10,500 rickshaw-taxi vehicles were inspected in the last financial year, 3,400 rickshaw-taxi vehicles were found guilty. A fine of INR 61.05 lakhs was collected from them. So, licences were suspended in 858 cases.

Also, 1,625 cases were reported of people transporting goods by rickshaw-taxi. A fine of INR 29.74 lakhs was recovered from this. Also, when 601 passenger buses were inspected, 185 vehicles were found in the case of illegal passenger transport. INR 56.26 lakhs was recovered from them. Also, when a total of 1,793 vehicles such as school buses and other vehicles plying students were inspected, 335 vehicles were found violating the rules. A fine of INR 14.02 lakh rupees was recovered from them, the information was given by the transport department.
