After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan, the situation is now affecting the Indian market as well. Prices of dry fruits have risen in Mumbai. Whilst almonds were prices at Rs 600/kg in Mumbai before the coup in Afghanistan, since the recent turn of events, its prices in the city have now soared to Rs 800- Rs 900/kg. Apart from this, the prices of cashews, pistachios etc. have also risen.

With prices expected to rise further in the coming days, the effects of occurrences in Afghanistan is expected to affect the common man’s pocket.

With dry fruits prices rising after the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan, the situation has become arduous since the product’s demand has risen due to monsoons and the arriving festivities. However, due to the lack of supply, prices are rising by 7-12%, in a week the rates have surged by Rs 200-250.

According to Jyoti Gupta, President of the Dry Fruits Retailers Association in Jammu, imports from Afghanistan have been affected for the last 15-20 days. Gupta was quoted by the ANI saying, “It is very difficult to explain to the customers the reason for the price hike to Rs 250/kg within 10 days, but we are helpless. I have revised the price list as per the circumstances so that customers do not face any problem”. She also added that the demand for the product is higher due to the festivities and the pandemic.

Gupta said, “We import almonds, figs, apricots, pistachios and cumin from Afghanistan. The demand for figs is particularly high due to the disease since it is said to help boost immunity. But now that imports have stopped, prices have gone up”.

Prices of almonds, figs, apricots, raisins in Afghanistan have shot up by Rs 200-300/kg, while pistachios have gone up by Rs 250/kg.

  • Afghan Almond: Earlier Rs 600/kg, now Rs 800-900/kg
  • Raisins: Earlier Rs 550/kg, now Rs 750/kg
  • Fig: Earlier Rs 800/kg, now Rs 1000/kg
  • Apricots: Earlier Rs 400/kg, now Rs 600/kg
  • Pistachios: Earlier Rs 1750/kg, now Rs 2000/kg

Earlier on Sunday, the Afghan government fell with President Ashraf Ghani leaving the country and the Taliban taking control of the capital, Kabul.
