In the aftermath of the many fires that broke out in hospitals in Mumbai and Maharashtra, the state health department has released guidelines for government-operated hospitals as well as suggested mock drills in the span of three months, reports stated.
Certain highlights of the guidelines as remarked in some narratives include:
- The health department recommends that all fire extinguishers should be filled prior to them expiring.
- Apart from this, the fire extinguishers should be easily accessible.
- A fire safety audit should be undertaken.
- All lacunae which is a missing gap or a part should be sorted.
- Mock drills must be conducted every three months.
- In these mock drills officers of the fire department and the disaster management must also partake.
- Fire extinguishers should be kept in all high-risk areas.
- All exit areas must be clear of hindrances.
- “Do’s and Don’ts” must be put on boards near the lifts.
- All hospitals in the hinterland must be equipped with sprinklers, alarms and extinguishing systems.
- Medical practitioners that include nurses and doctors must be constantly present in the ICU.
- Bedridden patients must be taken care of.
Moreover, in the BMC budget, an amount was set aside for procuring modern fire extinguishing materials and equipment, the primary budget provision for this is INR 2.64 crore.
