Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream project Bullet Train is most likely to commence for public use by the year 2026. The Mumbai-Ahmedabad 'Bullet Train' corridor will reduce the travel time on the 508 km route between the two cities to just 2 hours.

This announcement was made by the Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav on Tuesday, March 19, at an event. "India's first bullet train will be ready in 2026 and will run in one section from Surat," the minister added.

He said significant progress has been made in the construction of various stations and work has started on the sea tunnel through which the train will reach Mumbai from Thane. The Railway Minister had earlier shared a video of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad 'Bullet Train' corridor, which will reduce travel time to just 2 hours on the 508-km route between the two cities. The maximum speed of the bullet train on this route is expected to be 320 kilometers per hour.

24 river bridges, 28 steel bridges and seven mountain tunnels are being built for the bullet train route.

The corridor will also have a 7 km long undersea tunnel.

The corridor will feature a slab track system, a technology that will be used for the first time in India.

He further added that the Central government is working on the HSR (highspeed rail) project and it will cover Surat-Bilimora in Gujarat; however, the full stretch is expected to be completed in 2028.

The project aims to develop a high-frequency mass transit system by building high-speed rail between Mumbai and Ahmedabad using Japan's Shinkansen technology, which will increase mobility in India and contribute to the regional economic growth.

On December 21, 2023, the government signed a loan agreement with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to provide an official development assistance loan of 400 billion JPY (approximately INR 22,627 crore) as the 5th tranche for the construction of Mumbai.
