As winters are approaching, the air quality is deteriorating in Mumbai. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), air quality touched 188 (moderate) on Monday, November 1, which was higher than October 31, when the air quality touched 155.

Moderate air quality can cause breathing discomfort for people with lung diseases such as asthma and those with heart diseases. It can also cause discomfort in children and older adults, according to the CPCB's National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS).

Suppose the air quality is between 100 and 199. In that case, it is considered 'moderate.' The air quality between 50 and 99 is considered 'satisfactory,' while below 50 is considered 'good.' If AQI is in excess of 200, then it is considered 'poor' and if above 400 then it is 'very poor.' If the air quality surpasses 500, it is considered 'severe' and if above 500 the air quality is 'severe+.'

On Friday, October 15, the city's air quality was 141, and it has been rising consistently since then. The experts have said that the spike in airborne pollutants is typical during this time as there is a decrease in temperature and slower wind speeds.

An unseasonal rain is likely to occur in Mumbai towards the end of this week. It is difficult to predict now, but it is expected that most parts of the west Maharashtra coast could get rain for a day or two. South Konkan will feel heavier showers. Meanwhile, Mumbai stands a chance of receiving rains, said an official with the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) regional forecasting centre in Mumbai.
