In the last few months, Mumbai has recorded a lot of fire incidents. In an attempt to safeguard the residents, the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), in partnership with NGO 'Project Mumbai,' has started a unique campaign called 'Agni Rakshak.'

Under this campaign, they have trained citizen volunteers in fire safety and awareness, and in six months, they have successfully trained in fire safety and awareness.

The citizen volunteers are taught and trained about types/levels of fire, different mechanisms to extinguish it. They are also taught how to evacuate people, clear the way for fire brigade vehicles, etc.

Hemant Parab, chief fire officer of MFB, said they do not teach people how to handle major fires. The aim is to teach them how to handle minor fires through extinguishers. They let the citizens know about the protocols to be followed in such situations.

In the workshops that are organised at fire stations across Mumbai, only pre-registered candidates are given training sessions that take place every Saturday.

The initiative is a brainchild of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)  which was originally started in 2016. The objective was to train residents in firefighting to create a prompt response mechanism.

By 2019, the programme started losing its steam and in, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it could not be continued. However, in 2021, the MFB re-launched this programme.

Meanwhile, MFB has roped in a private agency for annual health check-ups for its staff for the next three years.
