Mumbai Fire Brigade is all set to spend INR 2.22 crores on the routine annual health check-up of firefighters for the next three years. They have already finalised a private agency for the same. The agency will conduct health check-ups for its 2,000 staff members, including officers and firemen above 35 years of age.

M/s Apollo Clinic will be finalized for this scheme, said an official from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). They will conduct 16 types of tests once a year from 2021-2023. The proposal will be tabled before the standing committee tomorrow, November 24.

Under the recommendations made by a fact-finding committee formed in 2015, this initiative has been taken up. As per the committee findings, many firefighters were found to be in poor health due to the stress of work and overburdening of tasks. These tests were done in BMC-run hospitals like KEM, Nair, Sion and Cooper Hospital in 2015. However, the tests were delayed due to the rush of outpatients at these hospitals.

In 2016, the fire brigade roped in a private agency whose contract ends this year. The civic body officials said that private hospitals have saved time and money as compared to BMC hospitals.

The tests would include hemogram, blood sugar, lipid profile, cardiac profile, eye examination and chest X-ray, and the department will pay INR 3,600 per person for the check-up for 2021 and 2022. Meanwhile, they will pay INR 3,900 per person in 2023.
