In the wake of several fire incidents taking place in the last few months, the municipal corporation has reduced the period of compliance to fire safety rules for establishments to 30 days.

Earlier, the Mumbai Fire Brigade gave societies 120 days to get their non-operational firefighting system working.

Now, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has now undertaken a special campaign for fire safety in high rises.

A team of four to five officials from each ward would go to the societies and establishments to check their fire safety system.

According to the fire officials’, it will be mandatory to take corrective measures in case of non-functional firefighting systems and establishments will have to submit a report within a month. However, failure to do so may attract legal action, followed by power and water supply cuts.

Following this, nearly 40 societies have been issued notices to fix their systems within a month, reports stated.

This intensified action comes after the fire accident occurred at One Avighna Park society in Currey Road on October 22.

As per reports, notices were issued to 327 societies that do not have a firefighting system in a previous investigation, where teams had visited various residential societies, commercial places and other establishments.

In addition, the fire brigade also conducted audits of 1,517 hospitals and nursing homes. Of which, notices were served to 247 private hospitals/nursing homes and six municipal hospitals who did not have a fire-fighting system. However, of these, 235 places have complied to the orders and are now equipped with fire-fighting equipment.
