Alstom Wins Contract to Produce 234 Coaches for Metro Lines 4 and 4A

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has awarded a contract valued at Rs 1,854 crores (€220 million) to infrastructure firm Alstom which will involve the designing and manufacturing of 234 metro cars for Metro lines 4 and 4A. Alstom will also be tasked with personnel training for the two Metro lines. 

Alstom further said that the line will be a 35.3 Km elevated corridor consisting of 32 stations in total. It will offer connectivity between the Eastern Express Roadway, Mono Rail, and the under-development Metro line 2B, line 5, and line 6. MMRDA officials have said that Metro lines 4 and 4A hold the potential to slash the current travel time by up to 75 per cent.

Ling Fang, Region President, Alstom Asia Pacific said, “These are exciting times, and this first order, following our merger with Bombardier Transportation demonstrates our continued commitment towards partnering in the country’s Make-in-India mission.”

Alstom employs around 8,000 people in India and is also undertaking the Metro line 3 project in Mumbai. The firm has been previously involved with metro coaches for cities like Chennai, Delhi, Kochi, and Lucknow.
