The Mumbai Central Jail finally managed to start its independent vaccination centre for the inmates from Tuesday, June 1.
The centre has been set up as per the Central Government guidelines to inoculate those who do not have valid ID cards. This includes prisoners, homeless people, patients from rehabilitation centres, senior citizens living in old age homes, and beggars.
On the first day of the inoculation drive, 169 prisoners received the COVID-19 vaccine jab at Mumbai's Arthur Road jail, BMC informed on Twitter. All these inmates were those who didn't have identification proof like Aadhar card which was mandatory for the vaccination. They were vaccinated on the basis of identity cards inside the jail.

Earlier, about 242 inmates of Mumbai Central (Arthur Road) jail were vaccinated at Kasturba Hospital as they had identity cards. However, in order to solve the problem related to ID cards, a separate immunisation centre has been set up at the jail premises itself. The vaccination centre has all the necessary facilities, including medical backup and other manpower. For this, the BMC got support from Mumbai Project, a non-governmental organisation.
In another tweet, the civic body thanked 'Project Mumbai COVID19' which is a non-profit project and their chief Dr. Shishir Joshi for setting up the centre.
It read, "Thank you Project Mumbai and Shishir Joshi for setting up an independent vaccine centre at Arthur Road prison enabling 169 inmates without documents to get vaccinated today. In the next few days, we shall vaccinate all inmates through this partnership."

Of which, less than 10 per cent of inmates are vaccinated in the last two months, who were above 45 years of age and had documents to get inoculated. As per the availability they were taken to Kasturba hospital and vaccinated.
