Irish Ambassador gifts Mumbai a historical collection of old maps

In addition to the city's rich culture and heritage, Mumbai recently received a prestigious gift from Ireland. The Irish government gifted Mumbai a set of documents of historic value which also consist of rare and valuable age-old maps.

Irish Ambassador Brian McElduff donated 37 maps to the Asiatic Society as a parting gift to the city at an event in Durbar Hall last week. This consists of maps dating back to the 19th century which display parts of Mumbai, England, and Ireland.

McElduff is known to be drawn towards archival items, places of historical importance, museums, etc. Accordingly, the Irish has visited the city 30 times so far as he attempts to capture the glimpse of its rich history.   

Meanwhile, the maps gifted by McElduff are said to be priceless and all these maps are said to be in a very decent condition. Accordingly, Asiatic Society President Vispi Balaporia thanked the Irish ambassador for his gift.  

The Asiatic Society of Mumbai which is over 200 years old recently appointed its first woman President, Balaporia (77) who was the former Vice Principal of Jai Hind College and former Head of Department of English at Mumbai University.
