Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Mumbai are on an all-time high and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been asked to take strict measures to curb the spread. Several public places in the city of Mumbai were recently crowded despite the increase in COVID-19 patients, and one of the most popular places often seen with a large number of people is the beach.
Observing the same, the BMC, on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, decided to keep the beaches closed until April 30, 2021. Sharing more information, BMC Commissioner, Iqbal Singh Chahal, in an order mentioned that the assistant commissioners have to ensure the spread is contained and restrictions are followed strictly due to the rise in cases. The decision was taken as directed by the state governments and officials have been asked to take strict measures to implement the same.
Beaches, in the month of March 2021, were crowded with several citizens, and this raised concerns for the administration. While the BMC had made plans to control the same, leaders from the opposition party suggested they should be kept closed for the public over the weekends, as it would contribute to the growing number of cases.
Meanwhile, citizens have also been asked to follow the rules strictly and leave the homes only if it is necessary. Private offices have been asked to encourage work from home, while restrictions have been placed on public parks, malls, cinema houses and other locations. Wearing a mask in public and maintaining social distancing has been made mandatory. However, if violated, the officials will impose a fine of INR 500 for the same.
