Mumbai Marathon 2018 is on its way and it does not seem like a very good occasion for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) as a sizeable number of its bus routes will be shut for the day to make way for the marathon. The BEST panel members have asked their management to demand compensation from the organisers of Sunday’s event for the loss the undertaking will incur due to the suspension of its services on routes which are part of the event. The panel member said that if the services remained closed, it will result in a loss of revenue, estimated to be ₹25 lakh.

How Mumbai Marathon 2018 Will Affect BEST Services

The Traffic Police have announced road restrictions for the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply & Transport (BEST) buses for the Tata Mumbai Marathon on January 21. According to this regulation, which is issued to ensure a smooth flow of vehicular traffic and the safety of the participants of the marathon, BEST won’t be able to run its services on 11 routes from 6:00 AM to 1:00 PM. A full marathon (42.195km) will start from Azad Maidan at CST while runners in the half marathon (21.097km) will run between Worli Dairy to CST.

BEST’s Take On The Suspension Of Services

The panel members feel that the BEST should demand some kind of compensation from the Marathon organisers. They said that the BEST has already suffered huge losses of ₹2 crore due to Maharashtra Bandh on January 2 and 3. Sunil Ghanacharya, a panel member, told that it is impossible to shut down services on the elaborate route as directed by the Traffic Police. During Maharashtra Bandh, the BEST bore tremendous loss due to damages incurred by stone-pelting and charring of numerous buses. He said that they cannot afford luxuries anymore and thus the services cannot be shut.
