A new ride-hailing platform, Bharat Taxi, has been launched in Mumbai, positioning itself as an alternative to established players like Ola and Uber. The app aims to transform the cab service sector through a cooperative, driver-centric model.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the initiative, emphasising its focus on improving driver welfare and creating a more equitable system. Unlike conventional aggregators, Bharat Taxi operates on a structure where drivers are treated as stakeholders rather than employees.

One of the key features of the platform is its no-commission model. Instead of charging drivers a percentage per ride, the app is expected to follow a fixed-fee system, enabling drivers to retain a larger share of their earnings. This approach could also translate into lower fares for passengers, making rides more affordable.

The platform also includes insurance coverage for drivers, addressing long-standing concerns about safety and financial security in the gig economy.

The launch comes amid growing dissatisfaction among drivers working with existing cab aggregators over high commissions and declining earnings. Bharat Taxi is being seen as an attempt to offer a sustainable alternative that benefits both drivers and commuters.
