Due to the spread of Buddhism in India, the cultural sites of Maharashtra associated with Lord Buddha are revered by the people of Bhutan. In this background, the President of the National Parliament of Bhutan, Wangchuk Namgyel, expressed the hope that tourism cooperation between Bhutan and Maharashtra should be increased.

Speaking on the occasion, Speaker Wangchuk Namgyel called for strengthening tourism ties with Maharashtra. He said India as also Maharashtra has many sites related to Buddhism which are of interest to the people of Bhutan. Stating that Maharashtra is home to the famous Ajanta and Ellora caves, he felt that tourism cooperation with Maharashtra will help people from both sides to visit each other.
Chairpersons of various parliamentary committees of Bhutan and members of parliament were present.
