In recent developments, Mumbai’s civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is to make death certificates available online soon.

Moreover, these death certificates are also to be issued in Marathi, English, Urdu and other Indian languages. The civic body has decided to register the birth-death certificate or correct the errors in it, online. To get the birth or the death certificate of a person, one has to go online on the website of the Municipal Corporation and fill the application. Even though it is said to be a time-consuming process, the citizens will now be able to apply for these certificates online as well as correct errors.

Earlier, Samajwadi Party group leader Raees Sheikh had demanded that online applications for birth and death certificates be allowed in view of the pandemic. In a meeting held at the corporation headquarters, Additional Commissioner Suresh Kakani had in response asserted that a decision will be taken in 14 days.

Before 2007, birth and death certificates were issued in the written format by the BMC for the citizens of Mumbai. After 2007, computerized certificates were issued. However, citizens have to face many problems to get pre-2007 certificates. Therefore, this comes as a token of good news, especially during these testing times.
