On Thursday, the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) urged the Maharashtra government to reimburse farmers for the crop loss owing to the heavy rainfall in the state’s Marathwada. Last week, all eight districts of Marathwada that include Aurangabad, Beed, Latur, Parbhani, Jalna, Hingoli, Osmanabad, Nanded faced extreme rainfall.

Ram Kulkarni, Maharashtra’s BJP spokesperson elaborated, based on a report by the Indian Express, that the heavy rains resulted in the death of 12 people who were swoon by the floodwaters. He added that in addition to this, approximate 800 animals were submerged through the region.

Kulkarni further elucidated that nearly 100% of Kharif crops bore the brunt of heavy rains to some extent or the other. Thus, he believes that the Maharashtra government must promptly give Rs 50,000 per hectare repayment for the crop loss to the farmers.

Soybean and cotton are the primary Kharif crops in the area and farmers of sugarcane are also anxious since the incessant rains have had a detrimental effect on their crop as well. In areas where the crop hasn’t been damaged, the quality, as well as quantity, is feared to not meet the usual benchmark.

Based on certain accounts, some 2.50 lakh hectares of agricultural land is yet flooded. 109% higher rain this season was seen in the said region.
