The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has delayed its financial aid plan for disabled individuals by two months. This initiative of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde was initially set to be launched before the Lok Sabha elections 2024 in April and May. However, due to the implementation of the model code, the plan was not started.

In August 2023, the BMC started a policy to provide financial support to disabled individuals, following the example of Thane and Navi Mumbai. This led to the introduction of the Dharmaveer Anand Dighe Divyang Financial Assistance Scheme by former municipal commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal.

The BMC's planning department devised a strategy under which 56,000 physically disabled individuals will receive yearly financial aid from the BMC. The aid will be disbursed in two instalments every six months, with each instalment amounting to Rs 10,000 for eligible disabled individuals.

The system is designed to cover 59,115 registered 'divyangs' who are over the age of 18. Individuals with a disability percentage between 40% and 80%, represented by yellow cards, will receive INR 6,000 every six months. On the other hand, blue card individuals who have a disability percentage above 80% will receive INR 18,000 every six months.

Currently, there are 42,078 yellow card and 17,037 blue card recipients. Reports suggest that while the necessary procedures for the scheme have been. Now, June has been set as the new implementation month for the project.
