The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has yet again faced setbacks in its toilet installation plans at mumbai beaches. The initial plan was to install bio-toilets. It was met with strong opposition from the locals, leading to a change in strategy. Then, the authorities started considering mobile toilets. But because of work delays, the contract was cancelled, and on Wednesday, December 13, a new tender was requested.

The Solid Waste Management (SWM) department initiated the installation of bio-toilets last year, following the National Green Tribunal's guidelines. But the authorities had to relocate those toilets at Versova and Aksa Beach three times due to local resistance.

In response to the opposition, the BMC decided to set up manufactured, movable mobile toilets. According to reports, these toilets would have separate sections for men, women, and individuals with special needs.

But the contractor's delay in work led to the cancellation of the contract, and a call for new offers has been released. The BMC also plans to penalise the contractor for the delay.

The mobile restrooms will be set up at various locations, including Girgaon, Dadar-Mahim, Juhu, Versova, Madh-Marve, and Manori-Gorai. The contractor will be responsible for maintaining the toilets and ensuring they are cleaned five times a day.

Mumbai's beaches attract thousands of residents and visitors daily. While there are some mobile restrooms, they are not well maintained. The BMC has also recently issued a tender for the making of 14,000 toilet seats within Lot 12, with a budget of INR 394 crore.
