The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has nearly utilized its budgetary provisions for its roads, stormwater drains (SWD) department and bridges, reported the Times of India. Thus, it is anticipated that it will have to make use of the emergency funds to address the forthcomings of nearly INR 600cr.

The civic authority is reported to have moved the proposal ahead of the civic standing committee to provide INR 200cr each to the department from the emergency funds. On Wednesday, November 17, the proposal will be discussed by the standing committee.

The account stated that according to officials from the civic authority, roads and SWD departments had utilized nearly 95 per cent of funds allocated in February during the budget. Additionally, nearly 75 per cent allocated to the bridges department was utilized.

From the INR 1187.14 cr allocated for the roads department by the civic body, INR 1152.76 cr was used. On the other hand, the bridges department, from the INR 444.93 cr provision used INR 370.33 cr. Of the SWD department, from the INR 505.14 cr, INR 487.36 cr was utilized as of October 2021.

Based on certain narratives, the civic body received backlash for its decision to undertake road repair works worth INR 1,200 cr from October 2021 that was kept pending. The opposition believed that the body was incurring expenses whilst important road work was being put on the back burner.
