Post the state government declared a ban on the use of plastic bags, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) too took an initiative by installing plastic collection bins and launched a helpline number 1800222357 as well. So far, the civic body has collected 120 tonnes (120000 kgs) of plastic waste across 24 civic municipal wards.
People have been asked to get rid of plastic waste by June 23, 2018, in case of its use, the civic body has made it clear that it will impose fine.
The civic body has collected 120 tonnes (12000 kgs) of plastic waste with the help of helpline number, the BMC managed to collect 108 tonnes (108000 kgs) of plastic waste. So far, the BMC has collected 45 tonnes (45000 kgs) of plastic waste from Vile Parle, Andheri and Jogeshwari area. Likewise, the BMC collected 34 tonnes (34000 kgs) of plastic waste from Byculla area, 30 tonnes (30000 kgs) of plastic waste between Bandra and Santacruz (H-West) and 16 tonnes (16000 kgs) of plastic waste between Andheri and Jogeshwari (K-West).
At the same time, the civic body collected less number of plastic waste from the areas such as Malad, Bhandup, Lower Parel.
It is been only 19 days we have launched a helpline number 180222357, only 153 people have called us to know about the waste segregation. We have not recieved calls post-April 10, 2018 from Goregaon, Malad, and no calls post-April 28, 2018 between Bhandup and Kanjur Marg,” Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner (Award).
