The civic body charges a fine of INR 200 if a person is found spitting in public places. Besides, as per the revised orders, it is mandatory to wear masks in public places since last year to prevent spread of coronavirus infection.

According to data revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), a fine of INR 33 lakhs has been collected in the last 10 months from people spitting in public places.

Apart from this, the BMC has also collected a fine of INR 59.82 crores from over 29.71 lakh citizens who were caught without wearing masks in public places in Mumbai.

As per the civic body, 16,659 citizens were fined for the same by BMC-appointed clean-up marshals.

A data released by BMC shows that a maximum penalty of INR 5.59 lakhs was recovered from 2,888 people in the Ward  L (Kurla, Sakinaka), followed by Ward A (CSMT, Churchgate, Fort) where INR 3.89 lakhs was collected and INR 3.40 lakhs from Ward P north (Malad).

The Solid Waste Management (SWM) department said that from Zone 1, which includes areas such as Churchgate, CSMT, Dongari, Malabar Hill, Byculla, marshals have taken action against 5,794 and collected INR 11.58 lakhs fine.
