Mumbai’s civic body, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has informed that it has collected a fine of about INR 49 crores from people without face masks in public places.

The BMC took to Twitter and stated that these numbers are not “fine” at all further urging people to wear masks in order for the authorities to bring down the rising numbers with regards to cases of coronavirus.

According to reports, the Maharashtra government had earlier increased the fine to INR 500 from the existing INR 200 on anyone venturing out in open spaces or public places without face masks. "Any person found to be without masks shall be fined an amount of INR 500. Any person found to be spitting in public places will be fined an amount of INR 1000", informed the Maharashtra government.

On the other hand, as per the Western Railways, more than 5,000 passengers who did not wear face masks have been caught by the railway authorities since last February. Moreover, a fine of INR 8,36,900 has been levied on these passengers. While it is mandatory to wear a face mask as a preventative measure while travelling, many ignore it. While commuting, some passengers have a mask in their pocket whereas some have a mask on their chin.

In view of the situation, the civic body of Mumbai has appointed marshals at various stations and boundaries to take action against such passengers in a bid to contain the spread of the contagious disease.
